In a statement to the House of Commons today, I recognized Shane MacLeod, a teacher in my riding and recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM. His innovative and inclusive approach to science education integrates real-world connections, at-home experiments and mastery-based learning to help students see themselves in science and build confidence. Beyond the classroom, he has trained educators nationwide, published research and led programs that open STEM pathways for underrepresented students.

Mr. Speaker,
I rise today to recognize Shane MacLeod, a teacher in my riding and recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM.
Mr. MacLeod’s approach to science education is defined by innovation and inclusion. He integrates current events and lived experiences into physics and environmental science, helping students see themselves in the material and understand how science shapes their world.
This includes his popular YouTube channel, which features at-home experiments and demonstrations filmed on his porch. He also uses a mastery-based testing model that lets students rewrite exams after reviewing feedback, helping students build confidence and a deeper understanding of difficult concepts.
Beyond his own classroom, Mr. MacLeod has trained science teachers across Canada through the Perimeter Institute, published peer-reviewed research, and led programs that open STEM pathways for girls and African Nova Scotian students.
I ask all Members to join me in congratulating Mr. MacLeod on this well-earned recognition.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
