Congratulations to Carolyn G. R. Thomas of East Preston on being invested into the Order of Nova Scotia.
This is an incredible and deeply well‑earned honour. As the province’s highest distinction, the Order of Nova Scotia recognizes individuals whose service has made a lasting impact—and Carolyn Thomas exemplifies that legacy.
For decades, Carolyn has been a tireless champion for human rights, education, and community empowerment. Beginning her career as an educator, she went on to serve as Coordinator of Race Relations and Affirmative Action with the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, where her leadership helped advance systemic change and employment equity. Her work extended nationally through the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and the Canadian Centre for Police Race Relations, and internationally as part of a Canadian delegation observing the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa.
A trailblazer within the African United Baptist Association, Carolyn broke barriers as one of its few female Moderators and inspired generations through faith‑based leadership. Her advocacy through the Black Learners Advisory Committee expanded educational opportunities for African Nova Scotian youth, while her co‑founding of the Mary Preston Historical Society and the Preston Area Board of Trade strengthened cultural preservation and economic development.
Throughout her career, Carolyn has empowered women, mentored young people, and fostered dialogue on equity and inclusion. Her impact is lasting, her leadership continues to inspire, and her legacy is woven into communities across the province.
This is a proud moment for East Preston and for all of Nova Scotia. Congratulations, Carolyn, and thank you for your extraordinary service.
