May marks Asian Heritage Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Asian Canadians in communities across the country.
This year’s theme, Honouring Asian Canadians: Stories that Built Canada, reminds us that Asian Canadians have helped shape our country for generations. From arts and culture to business, science, public service, sport, and community leadership, Canadians of Asian heritage have made lasting contributions to the Canada we know today.
Asian Canadian communities are incredibly diverse, with roots tracing back to nearly 50 countries. That diversity is one of Canada’s great strengths. It enriches our neighbourhoods, strengthens our economy, and helps build a more inclusive and vibrant country.
This month is also an opportunity to reflect on the barriers many Asian Canadians have faced, including exclusion, discrimination, and systemic racism. Recognizing those histories is an important part of honouring the leadership, resilience, and achievements of Asian Canadian communities.
Here in Sackville–Bedford–Preston, and across Canada, Asian Heritage Month is a chance to learn, celebrate, and recognize the people, families, businesses, organizations, and community leaders who continue to make a meaningful difference.
This May, I encourage everyone to take time to learn more about the rich and diverse histories of Asian Canadians and the stories that continue to help build Canada.
