March marks Irish Heritage Month in Canada. This designation was made official when the House of Commons unanimously adopted a motion introduced by James Maloney, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke-Lakeshore on March 10, 2021.

Irish Heritage Month is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about and celebrate the achievements and contributions of Canadians of Irish descent. Throughout Canada’s history, individuals of Irish heritage have played a significant role in shaping the diverse and prosperous country we know today.

Today, Canada is home to nearly 4.4 million people of Irish ancestry, representing approximately 12.15 percent of the population and forming the third largest ancestry group in the country, after English and French Canadians.

This month invites Canadians to reflect on and celebrate the rich cultural legacy and ongoing contributions of the Irish Canadian community across the country.
