October marks Canadian Islamic History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions of Muslim communities to Canadian society. Since its official proclamation by Parliament in 2007, this month has served as a meaningful opportunity to promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation of Islamic history, culture, and heritage across the country.
Now in its 18th year, Canadian Islamic History Month highlights the achievements and experiences of nearly 2 million Muslims who call Canada home. Their contributions have helped shape our country’s social, economic, and cultural landscape, making Canada more prosperous, inclusive, and diverse.
Throughout October, events, exhibitions, and educational activities showcase the richness of Islamic traditions and the role Canadian Muslims continue to play in building a better future for all. This observance also encourages dialogue, unity, and mutual respect, reminding us of our collective responsibility to stand against Islamophobia, racism, and hate in all forms.
This month is a chance to honour the past and present contributions of Canadian Muslims and to celebrate the values of inclusion and respect that define our national identity.
Happy Canadian Islamic History Month!
Quotes
“Today marks the beginning of Canadian Islamic History Month, a celebration of the many contributions that Muslim communities have made to Canada.
Muslim communities represent a rich mosaic of experiences and backgrounds. They have played a significant role in shaping the country we know today. Nearly 2 million people in Canada are Muslim with ancestry from more than 50 countries.
This cultural diversity strengthens Canada and enriches our society, with Canadian Muslims contributing every day in many fields and professions including medicine, science, engineering, the arts, entrepreneurship, finance, law and education.
Canadian Islamic History Month gives us an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and to reaffirm our commitment to inclusion for everyone. Our federal government stands with all Canadians in confronting hate, discrimination and Islamophobia. This includes continuing to work with Canada’s Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, Amira Elghawaby, providing at-risk communities with access to financial support to protect their gathering spaces, and supporting local initiatives that bring Canadians together and combat racism.
Canada is stronger because its people value the strengths that define us—diversity and inclusion.
Our many cultures and backgrounds are what makes our country one of the most vibrant and diverse in the world—one in which we can all take pride.
This October, I wish everyone a meaningful Canadian Islamic History Month.”
