Happy Portuguese Heritage Month

June is Portuguese Heritage Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Portuguese Canadians.

Throughout the month, communities across the country recognize the important role Portuguese Canadians have played in shaping Canada’s social, cultural, and economic landscape while celebrating the rich traditions and heritage of the Portuguese community.

Portuguese Heritage Month also coincides with Portugal Day, Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas, on June 10. The day honours Portugal, the Portuguese language, and Portuguese communities around the world. It also commemorates the death of renowned poet Luís de Camões in 1580, whose works are widely regarded as foundational to Portuguese literature and national identity.

As home to nearly half a million Luso-Canadians, Canada has one of the largest Portuguese diasporas in the world. This month is an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions Canadians of Portuguese heritage have made, and continue to make, to communities across the country.

Happy Portuguese Heritage Month! Feliz Mês do Património Português!
