The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, will announce that NRCan will provide nearly $5 million in funding to Net Zero Atlantic for the Data Analysis and Modelling for Atlantic Offshore Wind and Transmission project, to support a FEED study on the next stage of offshore wind planning and the proposed Wind West and Atlantic Energy Strategy. Advancing major electricity development is a shared priority between Canada and Nova Scotia, and this represents a step forward on a strategy that was referred to the Major Projects Office by Prime Minister Mark Carney in September 2025.
This project will support a variety of desktop modeling activities that will generate the technical evidence, spatial insight, and system-level analysis needed to support the next stage of offshore wind transmission planning. Work will include evaluating various offshore wind transmission interconnection and cable route options through various lenses, including:
- Stakeholder engagement and consultation,
- Environmental considerations,
- Cable technology and supply chain,
- Corridor routing and onshore interconnection facility requirements
The work will be guided by insight from an expanded interregional electricity system model first developed under the previously funded Atlantic Canada Offshore Wind Integration and Transmission Study.
